A Seafaring Oasis: Royal Caribbean’s Spectacular Oasis-Class Cruise Ships

Embarking on a Royal Caribbean cruise aboard one of their Oasis-class ships is like stepping into a floating paradise where luxury, innovation, and adventure converge. The Oasis Class, comprising ships like the Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Wonder of the Seas stands as a testament to the cruise line’s commitment to redefining the boundaries of maritime excellence. From lavish accommodations to unparalleled dining experiences and an array of thrilling activities, these ships offer an all-encompassing escape into the lap of nautical luxury. I recently traveled on the Wonder of the Seas, and I LOVED it!  My family has cruised with numerous cruise lines and different-sized ships, but Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class Wonder of the Seas is by far our favorite to date.

Accommodations

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class ships boast a diverse range of accommodations, catering to every traveler’s preference. From interior staterooms with virtual balconies offering real-time ocean views to expansive suites with private balconies, the cruise line ensures that passengers find their ideal home at sea. The opulent Crown Loft Suites, for example, provide a two-level oasis with floor-to-ceiling windows, a spacious living area, and a private balcony offering breathtaking ocean panoramas. You can also enjoy a neighborhood balcony stateroom with views of Central Park or the Boardwalk.  We stayed in a Central Park balcony stateroom, and it was so enjoyable to wake up and walk outside on our balcony or have a pre-dinner cocktail on the balcony while listening to the piano player down in Central Park.

Ship Design

Designed with architectural prowess and aesthetic finesse, Oasis-class ships are engineering marvels that redefine the very essence of cruise ship design. Each ship can accommodate between 6,500 and just under 7,000 guests!  The Wonder of the Seas currently has the largest capacity at 6,988 guests.  I thought for sure it would feel crowded, but it never felt that way.  The ship has so many options for dining, entertainment, and relaxation that my husband and I barely had enough time to enjoy them all during our week-long cruise.  We never had

trouble getting a lounge chair at the pool or seeing a show, even from the stand-by lane, and we were able to join in on any of the activities such as the zip line or the Abyss (more about this later) with less than a 10-minute wait.

These vessels are divided into seven distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm and ambiance. The iconic Central Park neighborhood, adorned with lush greenery and upscale boutiques, evokes the tranquility of a city park. You can also find several specialty dining restaurants and evening entertainment in Central Park. My favorite hidden bar, The Trellis Bar, is also located in Central Park.  The Boardwalk, reminiscent of a classic seaside boardwalk, features a hand-carved carousel and is alive with the energy of lively performances and family-friendly amusements. My husband and I loved riding the carousel, trying the hot dogs, and getting a milkshake at Johnny Rockets.

You can visit the pool/sport zone if you enjoy swimming or lounging.  The Wonder of the Seas (and most of the Oasis class ships) features four swimming pools: a lap pool and beach pool, a waterpark area, two racing water slides, and multiple hot tubs/whirlpools. This area also includes a sports court, ping pong tables, a minigolf course, and a dry playground for the little ones.  We did not have children with us, but for the families on the cruise, it was very convenient to have the water park and playground right next to the pool so the adults could relax while keeping an eye on their little ones.

Another neighborhood popular with the families onboard is the Youth Zone.  Royal Caribbean offers an excellent array of programming with certified staff for children of all ages.  They plan activities utilizing many of the common areas such as the karaoke club, ice skating rink and the sports zone. In addition, they have special areas designated for children and teens between the ages of six months old to 17 years old. They even have a “club” just for teens and almost all the services are included.

The ships also boast the Royal Promenade, a bustling hub of activity featuring shops, bars, and cafes. It was fun to bar-hop each night on the Wonder of the Seas.  Choices included (among many others!) the Schooner Bar for a relaxing evening, the Cask & Clipper Pub for a pint and some live music, The Playmakers Sports Bar to catch the latest game, and Boleros for a specialty cocktail and dance music.  In between cocktails we enjoyed shopping in the various stores

also located on the Promenade. The design seamlessly integrates the indoors with the outdoors, offering passengers a sense of openness and connection to the sea. The architecture is not just about aesthetics; it’s a strategic layout that enhances the overall cruise experience.

Other popular areas on the Wonder of the Seas, and also found on the Oasis class ships, are the adult-only Solarium, the Vitality Spa, and fitness centers.  We loved the Solarium on the Wonder of the Seas.  It sits at the front of the boat and offers a panoramic view of the ocean.  It has its own bar, pool, and whirlpool, as well as plenty of space for lounging and relaxing.  It’s also adjacent to the Solarium bistro, which we found to be a great spot to head for the breakfast buffet.  Next to the solarium is the Vitality Spa, which offers hot stone massages, facials, hair and nail services, and many other relaxing choices. Located just a few decks below is a fully equipped fitness center including treadmills with beautiful ocean views.

Dining Options

Culinary delights are at the heart of the Oasis-class experience, with an array of dining options that cater to diverse tastes and preferences. From casual eateries to fine dining restaurants, passengers can embark on a gastronomic journey around the world without ever leaving the ship.

One standout feature is the Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine, where avant-garde culinary creations come to life in a whimsical setting. Guests are taken on a multisensory journey, from molecular gastronomy to artistic plating, creating an immersive dining experience unlike any other. Sadly, we ran out of nights to try this unique restaurant, but it’s at the top of our list on our next cruise.

For those seeking a taste of traditional elegance, the main dining room offers a sophisticated ambiance paired with a diverse menu featuring expertly crafted dishes. There were themed nights such as Caribbean night, and everyone’s favorite, Surf and Turf night.  The service in the main dining room was superb from start to finish. Specialty restaurants like 150 Central Park, Chops Grille, and Izumi provide additional options for those looking to indulge in premium cuisine. I especially loved the filet mignon at Chops Grille. It was so tender and delicious!

Activities

Oasis-class ships redefine the concept of onboard entertainment and activities, offering a plethora of options for passengers of all ages. Thrill-seekers can challenge themselves on the onboard zip line, which provides an exhilarating ride from one end of the ship to the other, high above the decks. The FlowRider surf simulator and the Ultimate Abyss, a 10-story slide that twists and turns, offer adrenaline-pumping adventures for the more daring guests. I tried all of these, and my favorite was the Ultimate Abyss.  It should be on everyone’s list to try at least once.

The AquaTheater, an amphitheater-style venue located at the stern of the ship, hosts jaw-dropping aquatic shows that combine high-flying acrobatics with synchronized swimming. Other shows on the Wonder of the Seas included an ice-skating show (the rink is also open for passenger use throughout the cruise), a tap-dancing show (which was my favorite), and others. The on-board theaters feature Broadway-caliber productions, ensuring that guests are treated to world-class entertainment during their voyage.

Special Features

Beyond the expected, Oasis-class ships introduce a variety of special features that set them apart in the world of cruising. The Bionic Bar, staffed by robot bartenders who flawlessly craft custom cocktails, is a futuristic addition that never fails to impress. The Rising Tide Bar, a moving bar that traverses three decks, offers guests a unique experience as they enjoy their drinks while ascending or descending through the ship. We had the opportunity to try out both amazing experiences. Something to note, you can get alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at all the bars on the Wonder of the Seas, so guest of all ages can participate in these experiences.

The Central Park neighborhood, a first-of-its-kind concept at sea, is an open-air oasis featuring lush greenery, upscale dining, and tranquil spaces. Guests can enjoy a leisurely stroll through this botanical haven or dine al fresco under the stars, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a luxury resort. Central Park was definitely one of our favorite areas on the ship.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class cruise ships stand as marvels of modern maritime engineering, offering passengers an unparalleled blend of luxury, innovation, and adventure. From the lavish accommodations to the diverse dining options, thrilling activities, and special features, these ships provide a seafaring experience that transcends the ordinary. A voyage on an Oasis-class ship is not just a cruise; it’s a journey into a world where the boundaries between the ship and the destination blur, leaving passengers with memories of an oceanic oasis that will last a lifetime. My husband and I are already planning our next adventure on one of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships!
