Why Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Is One of My Family’s Favorite Walt Disney World Experiences!

When most families think about planning a Walt Disney World vacation, they immediately picture the theme parks… but one of my family’s favorite memories is spending a day at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park!
We’ve visited Typhoon Lagoon multiple times over the years, and my kids love it. They could spend the entire day floating in the lazy river or playing in the surf pool (but we always make time for the water slides too!)
And one of the best parts right now? Guests staying at Disney Resorts Collection hotels during summer 2026 (through September 8, 2026) receive complimentary water park admission on check-in day as part of their stay. It’s such a fun way to start your vacation immediately after arriving in Orlando.
There’s Something for Everyone!
What I love about Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is that kids (and adults!) of all ages can find something they love. My kids have visited over the past few years, and it’s been fun watching their favorite experiences change as they’ve grown.
The Surf Pool- My kids love the Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool, the largest wave pool in North America! The waves are huge and so much fun.
Castaway Creek Lazy River- If your family prefers a slower pace, the lazy river is perfect. We love grabbing tubes and floating around together. Disney cast members even join guests at times to play games and keep everyone entertained.
Water Slides & Thrill Attractions- We always make sure to experience the slides too! There are attractions for both thrill seekers and families wanting something more moderate.
Ketchakiddee Creek- If you have younger children, Ketchakiddee Creek is such a great area designed specifically for kids 48 inches and under. It has mini slides, fountains, splash areas, and shallow play spaces that are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.
Mountain Trail – One hidden gem at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is the Mountain Trail, a walking path that winds around the base of Mount Mayday. From this trail you’ll get beautiful views of the park, waterfalls along the pathway, and close-up views of the iconic Miss Tilly shipwreck on top of the mountain.
Our Favorite Way to Do Typhoon Lagoon on Arrival Day
Taking advantage of the complimentary water park admission on arrival day has become one of my favorite ways to start a Walt Disney World vacation.
When flying to Orlando, I purposely schedule an early morning flight so we can maximize the day. Before we leave home, I pack all of our water park essentials together in one easy-to-grab bag inside our checked luggage, including:
- Swimsuits
- Water shoes
- Sunscreen
- Goggles
Once we arrive at our Disney resort hotel, we grab the water park bag from our suitcase, leave the rest of our luggage with Bell Services, and quickly change in the resort pool bathrooms or changing area before heading to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park for the day.
It’s such an easy way to start vacation mode immediately… and it makes check-in day feel like part of the vacation instead of just a travel day!
Helpful Tips
Bus Transportation – Complimentary bus transportation is available from Disney Resort hotels to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. During summer 2026, some resorts may offer direct bus transportation to the water park. Guests staying at other Disney Resorts Collection hotels will typically take a bus to Disney Springs and then transfer to a Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park bus.
Arrive Early- On our last summer trip, we arrived right at park opening (10:00 AM), and I highly recommend doing this. Because we arrived early were able to, find chairs under an umbrella, ride several attractions with minimal waits, and enjoy the park before the afternoon thunderstorm rolled in.
Plan For Lunch- We always plan for lunch when we’re there. The Sand Pail Sundae is huge and so fun to share as a family. My kids talk about it every trip! Mobile ordering is also available at select dining locations, which makes lunch super convenient during a busy water park day.
Complimentary Towels – Guests staying at Disney Resorts Collection hotels can receive complimentary towels!
Locker Rentals – Lockers are available to rent, which is helpful for storing valuables and dry clothes.
Life Jackets – Complimentary life jackets are available throughout the park on self-serve racks for guests of all ages.
Florida Summer Storms – Afternoon storms are VERY common in Florida, especially during the summer months. Attractions will temporarily close if lightning is nearby, so I always recommend:
- Arriving early
- Keeping your belongings in a locker or under an umbrella to stay dry
- Watching the weather forecast so you can plan to leave before the weather gets really bad
Extra Upgrades Worth Considering
If you want an even more relaxing experience, there are upgraded seating options available.
Umbrella Rentals – These rentals include a beach umbrella, reserved seating, towels, and a drink table. They accommodate up to 4 guests and are located near the surf pool. Pricing varies by date and ranges from approximately $49–$109 plus tax.
Beachcomber Shacks – For larger groups or families wanting extra comfort, Beachcomber Shacks are an amazing option! These private shaded areas can accommodate up to 10 guests and include cushioned seating, towels, a locker, cold water, select soft drinks, and dedicated attendants for food and beverage ordering. Pricing typically ranges from $225–$425 plus tax depending on the season and package selected.
Surfing Programs – Ride dozens of waves during open surf or a private surf session in the wave pool before the park opens or after it closes. Each 3-hour session comes packed with 100 waves, broken into sets of 25.
Reservations can book up quickly, so I highly recommend reserving the experiences in advance.
Disney H2O Glow After Hours
Another fun option during the summer is Disney H2O Glow After Hours at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon!
This separately ticketed nighttime event takes place on select evenings from June 2 through September 5, 2026 and features:
- Lower wait times
- Special entertainment
- Nighttime lighting effects
- A completely different atmosphere from daytime visits
If your family loves water parks but wants shorter waits and a fun nighttime vibe, this can be such a fun add-on to your Walt Disney World vacation.
Ticket Options
There are a few different ways to experience Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park during your Walt Disney World vacation, depending on how you like to travel and plan your park days.
1-Day Water Park Ticket – This is a great option if you want to dedicate an entire day to relaxing and enjoying the water park. This is perfect for families visiting during the hotter months who want a break from the theme parks while still enjoying Disney fun.
Water Park and Sports Option – This is one of my favorite upgrades to recommend for families planning longer Walt Disney World vacations during the summer. This ticket allows guests to visit one theme park per day PLUS includes extra visits to experiences like:
- Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park
- Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park
- Miniature golf
- Golf courses
- ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex
This ticket is also available as a park hopper option!
Water Park Benefit – Disney Resort hotel guests arriving in summer 2026 can enjoy water park admission on check-in day, included with their stay! This benefit is only available for check-in dates from May 26 to September 8, 2026. It will also be available in summer 2027.
I like to book an early flight into Orlando so I can experience this perk each trip!
The Perfect Mix of Relaxation and Fun
One thing you’ll probably notice during your visit to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is the theming. The entire park is designed to look like a tropical paradise that was hit by a massive typhoon, complete with a shipwreck, sandy beaches, waterfalls, and other hidden details. There’s even tropical music playing throughout the park that adds to the laid-back island atmosphere. It truly feels like stepping into a story instead of just visiting a water park.
A visit to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon has become one of those experiences my family looks forward to every single trip! It’s the perfect combination of excitement and relaxation. If you’re thinking of a way to enhance your next Walt Disney World vacation, I recommend a trip to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park!
