Multigenerational Cruise Travel: What It’s Really Like!

Spring Break 2026 brought a multi-generational family cruise onto our calendar, and we could not have had more fun! Traveling with toddlers is one thing. Traveling with toddlers and your entire extended family? That’s a whole different experience – but in the best way!

I recently returned from a 5-night sailing on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Freedom of the Seas – where there were nine of us in total between three staterooms (all neighboring). My husband and I had the only little ones – so seven adults versus two kids seemed like pretty good odds of having a great time! (And spoiler alert- we had a BLAST!)

This trip included:

My husband and myself
Our two children (ages 3 and 1)
My in-laws
My husband’s brother and his wife
My husband’s sister

Cruising with Royal Caribbean Works So Well for Big Family Trips!

Organizing a trip for nine people sounds overwhelming… until you realize a cruise solves most of the logistics for you. We each had our own space between three staterooms, but we also had a connecting door to our in-laws room (which allowed this mom and dad to sneak out when the kids were sleeping without batting an eye!). This was perfect for us to allow the kids to check out the balcony and hang out together, with plenty of extra eyes and without worrying about balcony safety at night! If you are traveling with little ones, I highly recommend a connecting stateroom!

We booked three staterooms:

A Spacious Ocean View for our family of four
A connecting Spacious Ocean View Balcony for my in-laws and my sister in law
Another Spacious Ocean View for my brother and sister-in-law

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line does multi-generational travel SO well. There are truly activities for every age, from splash pads and pools to an adults-only solarium, to evening shows and top notch dining. We were all able to do our own things during the day (or spend time together), and then always able to catch up at dinner! Cruising is one of the easiest ways to keep everyone happy—from toddlers to grandparents and everyone in between!

The Reality of Cruising with Toddlers

While traveling with a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old isn’t always “relaxing”- cruising, especially with extended family, makes it feel doable… and even enjoyable! We had extra eyes and hands when we needed them, but also got to spend special one on one time with each kiddo!

The perks of cruising with littles:

Plenty of open space onboard for them to explore safely
Casual dining options (no pressure if meals are quick)
Flexible schedules – nap time didn’t derail our day!
Built-in entertainment everywhere you turn- my oldest kept asking to do the dancing class on the stage by the pool!

And, since there were always family members around to help when needed:

We could actually enjoy meals
We could take turns relaxing
The kids were constantly entertained

We Chose an Itinerary with Ports That Actually Worked with Little Kids!

Not all cruise ports are toddler-friendly—but these two were so easy for us on this 5-night sailing!

Our first port day was Nassau, Bahamas. My husband and I booked a day at Royal Caribbean’s brand new Royal Beach Club – Paradise Island, which was just a short ferry ride away from the cruise port (and stroller friendly start to finish!). This destination was ideal for families, with multiple food shacks, a zero entry pool, swim up bar, unlimited ice cream (yes please) and beach JUST on the family side of the private beach destination (so this isn’t even the whole destination!) Paradise Island felt like a controlled, family-friendly beach day – which is exactly what you want with little ones!

On day four, we docked at Grand Turk, one of the collection of islands of Turks & Caicos! This port allowed us to walk off the ship, and in less than 10 minutes, we were on a beautiful white sand beach, with calm, crystal clear waters. We built sand castles, swam in the ocean, and explored souvenir shops – and still made it back on the ship in time for lunch and a nap! There was no complicated transportation, no specific meeting time – just a beautiful morning going at our own pace!

Traveling with littles means taking things slower than you might otherwise – but honestly, that was the best part of this vacation! We were able to disconnect, slow down together, and just enjoy one another – making memories that I will keep forever! And having my extended family there was just the cherry on top- watching them experience all of this with their grandparents, aunts, and uncle was the best gift!

Would I Recommend a Cruise to Multi-Generational Families?

1000% yes—especially for families with young kids. Multigenerational travel isn’t just about convenience, but shared memories. Our girls experienced new destinations, family dinners, and built-in family fun that our family got to be a special part of. Taking a break from the hustle of daily life and making memories together was truly the biggest gift of this trip, and something we will talk about for years to come!
