Miles of Magic: My Love Affair with runDisney Races!

There’s just something so special about that mix of Disney magic and the feeling of accomplishment you get from a race. Over the years, I’ve found myself lacing up my running shoes again and again for runDisney events at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, and honestly, that enchantment never really fades. Last year’s Springtime Surprise 10K was the latest chapter in my runDisney love story, and while it was wonderful, it also feels like it might be my last. The year before’s arthritis diagnosis in my knees has really changed things, and I’ve had to take a big step back from running. I knew I absolutely had to do this 10K, but unfortunately, I ended up walking almost the entire race.
For anyone who hasn’t experienced it, a runDisney race is way more than just putting one foot in front of the other. It’s this totally immersive experience that starts way before you even get to the starting line. The energy leading up to race weekend is just electric, with runners from all walks of life buzzing with excitement. The expos are amazing – exclusive merchandise, fun photo ops, and inspiring talks from running experts. It’s like this whole community comes together, all of us connected by our love for being active and, of course, all things Disney.
But the real magic? That happens on race day. Forget your typical boring road race scenery! Where else can you actually run through the iconic parks before they even open to the public? Seriously, picture this: the sun is just starting to peek over Cinderella Castle as you’re running down Main Street U.S.A., and you can hear those familiar Disney tunes in the air. It’s this surreal, breathtaking feeling that makes you feel like you’re part of something truly special.
Last year’s Springtime Surprise 10K was no different. Running through the vibrant World Showcase in EPCOT, with Spaceship Earth just gleaming in that early morning light, was incredible. And the characters! My all-time favorite, and someone you hardly ever see, is Megara from Hercules. I’ve been going to Disney for years and have never actually met her! So, when I saw the race theme for the 10K was Hercules, I knew I had to sign up. I actually got so lucky – she was the very first character stop on the course! I wasn’t too sweaty yet in that Florida heat, and after waiting in line for about 20 minutes (yeah, the character lines can get long!), I finally got to say hi and snap a photo. Those interactions just add this fun, whimsical element that really keeps your spirits up, even when your legs start to feel a little heavy.
Over the years, I’ve been so lucky to participate in all sorts of runDisney events, from the fun 5Ks to the half marathons and even that crazy Dopey Challenge! Each race has its own unique charm and course, taking you through different parks and resorts, so you get these fresh and exciting perspectives of the whole Disney World property. Whether you’re running through Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom (where you can ride Expedition Everest during the marathon course), or EPCOT, every single mile has these little delightful surprises.
And it’s not just about the running, runDisney races are a total celebration. The costumes are legendary – people get so creative and really show off their love for Disney through these incredible outfits. I’ve dressed up for every single runDisney race I’ve done, and honestly, the creativity just gets better every year. The atmosphere is always so supportive and encouraging, with everyone cheering each other on. It’s a really inclusive environment, whether you’re going for a personal best or just enjoying a leisurely jog (or in my case last year, a walk!) through the parks.
If you’re looking for a race that combines fitness, fun, and a whole lot of Disney magic, then a runDisney event at Walt Disney World is something you absolutely have to do. Trust me, the miles really do fly by when you’re surrounded by pixie dust and cheering crowds. It’s an experience that leaves you with the most incredible memories and makes you want to keep coming back for more magical miles. While this Springtime Surprise 10K might have been my last runDisney race due to my knees, I’ll never forget the joy and magic these events have brought into my life. I’ll definitely be there cheering everyone else on in the future!
